Vatican II in North America, Australia, and Oceania
Clifford, Catherine E., Massimo Faggioli, Richard Lennan, and Ormand Rush, eds. Vatican II in North America, Australia, and Oceania. Leuven: Peeters, 2025.
This book gathers 34 chapters by authors from North America, Australia and Oceania on the contribution to Vatican II from the local churches and on the reception of Vatican II in these local churches. The first section explores the social-cultural context of the United States, Canada, and Australia at the beginning of the council. The middle section of this volume examines several overarching themes connected to the council’s reception. The final, and longest, section of the volume engages directly with many of the council’s sixteen documents. The chapters make abundantly clear that while the council’s teachings have reshaped Catholic life in ways unimaginable before Vatican II, it remains urgent that local churches continue to engage the council’s documents as the social situation of ecclesial communities remain in flux.
The Legacy and Limits of Vatican II in an Age of Crisis
Clifford, Catherine E., Kristin M. Colberg, Massimo Faggioli, and Edward P. Hahnenberg, eds. The Legacy and Limits of Vatican II in an Age of Crisis. Collegeville: Liturgical Press Academic, 2025.
Through historical and theological lenses, the contributors to The Legacy and Limits of Vatican II in an Age of Crisis aim to rediscover forgotten voices and overlooked moments of Vatican II. The contributors offer readers insights on the council’s teaching related to the sexual abuse crisis, antiracism, politics, the Synod on Synodality, and much more. By reexamining the teaching of Vatican II from the perspective of our present ecclesial crisis, readers will have a better understanding of how its legacy and limits affect the ongoing reform of the church in a much-changed theological, ecclesial, and social landscape.

Das Zweite Vatikanische Konzil: Ereignis und Auftrag
Sandra Arenas, Edo Bedjira, Catherine Clifford, et al., eds. Das Zweite Vatikanische Konzil – Ereignis und Auftrag. Band 1. Allgemeine Einführung und Hermeneutik. Herder, 2024.
The Oxford Handbook of Vatican II
Clifford, Catherine E. and Faggioli, Massimo, eds. The Oxford Handbook on Vatican II. Oxford University Press, 2023.
This book is a rich source of information and reflections on many aspects of the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), the most significant religious event of the last century. The handbook presents 44 chapters covering the complex history of the Second Vatican Council of the Catholic Church (1962-1965), including contributions from a wide range of geographical and theological perspectives. Ecumenical scholars reflect on the significance of Vatican II for the life of other Christian churches and the search for unity and reconciliation. Surveying the diverse receptions of the council in the perspective of a world church, chapters focusing on Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, Europe, and Oceania reflect on the interpretation and influence of the council and its teaching on the life of the Church in diverse cultural contexts.
Rejoice and Be Glad
In this newest papal exhortation, released on April 9, 2018, and entitled Gaudete et Exsultate (Rejoice and Be Glad), Pope Francis looks at the call to holiness in today’s world, which is something to which we all can aspire. No matter who we are, young or old, and no matter what our vocation, it is in the very act of living—with humility, kindness, and mercy—that we can become holy.

Decoding Vatican II: Ecclesial Self-Identity, Dialogue, and Reform. New York: Paulist Press, 2014.
Fifty years on, Catholics are confronted with competing narratives concerning the event of the Second Vatican Council as well as the meaning and value of its teachings. How are we to make sense of the various characterizations of the council, often in polemical tones, as a disastrous departure from tradition, a disappointing compromise, or a moment of measured reform?
All agree that Vatican II marks a big turn in the history of Catholicism, marked by a dialogical engagement with other Christians, other religions, and the modern world. To fully comprehend the event of Vatican II and to correctly interpret its teachings requires a deeper appreciation of the new self-consciousness of the church as an actor in history, and of its mission of service to the whole human family.
Keys To the Council: Unlocking the Teaching of Vatican II. Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 2012.
As the church marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, too few Catholics have an adequate grasp of what the council contributed to the life of the church. The problem is understandable. The Second Vatican Council produced, by far, more document pages than any other council. Consequently, any attempt to master its core teachings can be daunting. There is a danger of missing the forest for the trees. With this in mind, Keys to the Council identifies 20 key conciliar passages, central texts that help us appreciate the vision of the council fathers. Each chapter places the given passage in its larger historical context, explores its fundamental meaning and significance, and finally considers its larger significance for the life of the church today. Chapters include exploration of Sacrosanctum Concilium’s demand for “full, conscious, and active participation” in the liturgy; Lumen Gentium’s eucharistic ecclesiology; Gaudium et Spes’s vision of marriage as an intimate partnership of life and love; Nostra Aetate’s approach to non-Christian religions; and more. It received the following awards: Midwest Independent Publishers Association: First Place: Religion/Philosophy; Association of Catholic Publishers (2013): Third Place: Excellence in Publishing Award.

The Second Vatican Council (1961–1965) was one of the most significant religious events of the twentieth century. In Canada, it was part of a moment of unprecedented cultural and societal change, causing Canadian Catholics to re-examine the church’s place and mission in the world. For four years, Canadian Catholic bishops met with their peers from around the globe to reflect on and debate the pressing issues facing the church. This bilingual volume explores the interpretation and reception of Vatican II in Canada, looking at many issues including the role of the media, the reactions of other Christians, the contributions of Canadian participants, the council’s impact on religious practice and its contribution to the growth of interreligious dialogue.
